April 2013

The 2013 NLNAC Board of Commissioners elections will begin in June 2013.  Voting privileges are assigned to programs, and each accredited program will receive one vote.  Nurse administrators of multiple programs will receive a separate email for each NLNAC-accredited program. These multiple emails should not be discarded as duplicates.  Votes may be cast until July 31, 2013, and newly elected members will take office on October 1, 2013.  Representatives of NLNAC-accredited programs will receive an email from BigPulse, a third-party election vendor which has been contracted to host the online election process.  The sender on this email will appear as “NLNAC 2013 ELECTIONS,” and the email will provide a link to the 2013 election ballot as well as general voting instructions.

We thank you for your participation in this important process!

We would like to thank all nursing programs for submitting the 2012 Annual Report. We are happy to announce that there was 100% participation from all 1,300 accredited nursing programs. As you are aware, the ongoing monitoring of each accredited program through annual reporting is a requirement of the U.S. Department of Education.

Spring Greetings! For many of you, graduation ceremonies are drawing near, and we at the NLNAC wish you a successful close to the academic term. It has also been a busy time for the NLNAC as we continue our work to support the accredited nursing programs. In the Fall 2012 Cycle, the NLNAC reviewed 146 nursing programs for continued or initial accreditation. The meeting of the Evaluation Review Panel was held on January 28 – February 1, 2013, and the meeting of the Board of Commissioners was held on March 7-8, 2013; we wish to sincerely thank the Panelists and Commissioners who volunteered their time and energy for each essential level of review.
As you know, in January, the 2013 Standards and Criteria were released. Since that time, the NLNAC staff has been engaged in supporting the nursing programs and our program evaluators in transitioning to the revised Standards at each level of the accreditation process. In addition, I and members of the NLNAC professional staff have attended several national and state meetings in order to orient our constituents to the Standards, including the annual conferences for the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). The 2013 Standards and Criteria, the Accreditation Manual, and the revised Glossary are available online at the NLNAC website. We strongly encourage all nurse administrators and faculty to take advantage of these resources.
As always, I encourage you to contact any of the staff if we can assist you, and I extend to all of you my best wishes for safe summer holidays.

We are proud to announce that on February 22-23, 2013, we trained eighty-eight new program evaluators at the Program Evaluator Forum in Atlanta. These nurse administrators and faculty will join more than six hundred of their colleagues who are currently serving nursing education in the peer review process. We extend our appreciation to the new site visitors for their commitment to quality nursing education. In addition, all current program evaluators will complete an online orientation to the 2013 Standards and Criteria this summer. Please watch for the announcement of the release of the program. We are excited to implement the 2013 Standards and Criteria, and we look forward to continuing our work with the wonderfully dedicated volunteers who support accreditation.

Fall 2013 ForumsLimited space is still available for the upcoming Fall 2013 Self-Study Forums in Atlanta (September 12-13) and Dallas (November 1-2). The Forums this year are the first to introduce the new 2013 Standards and Criteria in the writing of the Self-Study Report and Follow-Up Reports. More than six hundred participants attended the Spring Forums in Atlanta and Las Vegas. Early registrations for the Fall Forums indicate that attendance will be equally strong for the remaining Forums. If you and/or your faculty plan to attend a Forum this year, register today before it is too late! Registrations will close once capacity in either location is filled. Visit us online at www.nlnac.org to learn more about the Forums, the free Special Sessions offered, or to register.

Registration is now open for the January 17, 2014, Workshop for new nurse administrators in Atlanta. Effectively Leading an NLNAC-Accredited Program: A Workshop for the New Nurse Administrator was first offered in January 2013, and it was attended by over eighty nurse administrators of NLNAC-accredited programs who were new to their important role. The last Workshop for this year will be offered in June and is already filled. If you are a new nurse administrator or are new to accreditation, this workshop is for you! For more information, or to register for January 2014, visit us online at www.nlnac.org.
